September 6 is National Read-a-Book Day, and to celebrate the occasion, Vet Candy is releasing an e-storybook for kids, “I was Born to be a Veterinarian.” The storybook tells the story of a veterinarian’s journey from childhood to motherhood and her pursuit of becoming a veterinarian. The bilingual storybook features text in both English and Spanish.
The children’s book is dedicated to Dr. Marta Sanchez-Emden, who herself is a mother of two boys and owner of Animal Health and Rehab Center in Miami. Dr. Marta says that the book is helpful for parents teaching their children about different career paths. Dr. Marta, who is of Hispanic descent, notes that the book “is also meant to show children from all backgrounds and cultures that veterinary sciences are available to them also.”
Dr. Marta’s first child was born in her second year of veterinary school, and completing vet school is something that Dr. Marta still remembers as a “challenging but rewarding time.” According to her, the book “I was Born to be a Veterinarian” brought back memories of why she became a vet, as well as the difficulty, and joy, of being a parent while in school.
Parents and caregivers are encouraged to read the storybook to their children, which can be downloaded by clicking on the link below:
