From Doubt to Confidence: How Courtney Dunning Found Her True Calling in Vet Med
Unlike many who knew they wanted to be a veterinarian from a young age, Courtney Dunning's path to veterinary medicine wasn’t so straightforward. It wasn’t until her sophomore year of college that she made the decision to pursue a career in veterinary medicine, after spending time torn between the fields of physician assistant and vet med. “I’ve always had a love for medicine and science,” Courtney reflects. “I was stuck between the two professions, and I honestly wasn’t sure which one was the right fit for me.”
In the end, she chose to become a vet, and she’s never looked back. Now a second-year veterinary student at Auburn University, Courtney couldn’t be more certain that she made the right choice. “Vet school is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” she says with a smile. “It’s a career that offers so many different paths, and I’m excited to explore where it takes me.”
Her passion for laboratory animal medicine and small animal care allows her to blend her love for research with her commitment to improving the health of animals. Whether she’s working in the lab or treating pets, Courtney is driven by the desire to enhance the human-animal bond, one animal at a time.
The Power of Confidence and Authenticity
Courtney’s journey hasn’t been without challenges, but she’s learned to embrace her own uniqueness along the way. She has a piece of advice she often reminds herself of: “Be unapologetically you, no matter what,” she says. “Your uniqueness is what attracts friends, connections, and opportunities that last a lifetime.”
This mindset wasn’t always easy for Courtney, especially during her younger years, but she’s come to realize the immense power of staying true to herself. “When you stay true to yourself, there’s nothing to worry about,” she shares. “You’ll be fine, and everything will work itself out.” Courtney’s confidence today is a result of understanding her worth and not feeling the need to fit into anyone else’s mold—a lesson she wishes she could have told her younger self.
Self-Care and Confidence-Building
Like most veterinary students, Courtney often faces long and stressful days, filled with lectures, labs, and hands-on learning. To recharge, she finds joy in simple activities that help clear her head. “After a long day, I love to go for a run or write in my journal,” she says. “It’s a great way to reflect on the day and de-stress.” But one of her favorite ways to clear her mind is by cooking. “Cooking is such a rewarding experience,” she says. “It involves a lot of sensory activity and gives me a sense of accomplishment.”
Interestingly, one of Courtney’s most empowering confidence-building activities is something many might find intimidating—dining alone. “I recommend everyone try going on a solo dinner at least once,” she says. “It might sound scary at first, but it’s such a great way to enjoy your own company and build confidence. Plus, you might even get a free dessert or a discount,” she laughs. Courtney has learned that stepping outside of her comfort zone leads to new opportunities for connection—and sometimes, a sweet surprise.
Purpose and Motivation in Life
For Courtney, having a sense of purpose is crucial for not just her career but also her overall well-being. “Finding a purpose is so important because it gives us something to look forward to,” she says. “It motivates us, and with that motivation, we develop the skills and discipline needed to fulfill that purpose.” Whether it's working with animals or striving to become a role model for future Black veterinarians, Courtney finds that having a clear purpose guides her decisions and actions every day.
“Purpose shapes the way we live and affects everything we do,” she adds. “It creates a lifestyle that’s driven by passion, and that’s what keeps us moving forward.”
A Future Full of Purpose
Courtney Dunning’s journey into veterinary medicine is just beginning, but it’s already clear that she’s destined to make an impact. Her story serves as a reminder to all of us that finding the right path might not always be immediate, but with confidence, authenticity, and a sense of purpose, success and fulfillment will follow.
As Courtney continues her studies and works toward becoming a veterinarian, she’s inspired by the opportunity to help animals, mentor others, and contribute to a field that truly excites her. And with her drive and passion, there’s no doubt that she will go on to inspire many others—just as she already has in her journey so far.
