Behind the Scenes: The Unseen Struggles of Veterinarians Revealed

In a world where the well-being of animals is intricately linked to human health and safety, veterinarians stand as unsung heroes. Yet, despite their critical role in safeguarding food safety, animal welfare, and public health, veterinarians often find themselves grappling with underappreciation and unseen struggles.

The theme for World Veterinary Day 2024, designated by the World Veterinary Association, underscores the indispensable nature of veterinarians in our society. However, a recent survey conducted by Boehringer Ingelheim reveals a sobering reality: only 49% of veterinarians feel that their profession is truly appreciated.

Fabio Paganini, a member of Boehringer Ingelheim's Global Animal Health Executive Committee and a practicing veterinarian, emphasizes the importance of recognizing the vital contributions of veterinary professionals. Despite the challenges they face, he highlights the dedication, compassion, and expertise that define the veterinary vocation.

Dr. Ellen Van Nierop, President of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association, echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the need to address the stress and burnout driving many veterinarians away from the profession. Veterinary professionals play a pivotal role in maintaining animal and societal health, making it imperative to shine a light on their often-unseen efforts.

The survey delves deeper into the factors contributing to veterinarians' perceived lack of appreciation. While clients acknowledge veterinarians' expertise and ethical decision-making, there's a significant gap in understanding the emotional and physical toll of the job. Nearly half of the respondents feel underappreciated for their resilience to stress, emotional exhaustion, and sacrifices made to prioritize animal care.

To address these challenges, Boehringer Ingelheim has launched the "Going Beyond" campaign, in collaboration with industry partners and veterinary associations. This initiative aims to raise awareness of the essential care provided by veterinarians and foster appreciation for their tireless dedication. By showcasing the unseen aspects of veterinary work, the campaign seeks to support veterinarians and inspire future generations to pursue this noble profession.

Dr. Jan Bahlmann, Head of Animal Health Customer Insights at Kynetec, emphasizes the importance of understanding veterinarians' experiences to drive positive change. Through empirical research and data analytics, Kynetec has played a crucial role in uncovering the realities of veterinary practice and informing initiatives like the Going Beyond campaign.

As the world celebrates World Veterinary Day, it's essential to recognize the invaluable contributions of veterinarians and commit to supporting their well-being. By shedding light on their challenges and amplifying their voices, we can ensure that veterinarians receive the appreciation and recognition they deserve for their tireless dedication to animal health and welfare.
