Not looking forward to that birthday milestone?
Twenty-one is a landmark birthday for most people. It is celebrated, sometimes wildly, because hey, you can finally drink! (Legally anyway.) The early and mid-twenties go by in a flash and then you are looking at it. Thirty. Maybe you looked the other way at 30 and you're at—well—a later milestone. Preparing for these landmark birthdays may be a little harder now that there's nothing special to look forward to.Let's face it. When we were younger the future we imagined for ourselves was probably not where we are today. Maybe we saw ourselves at the top of a Fortune 500 company. Maybe we thought we'd be in a high paying job in a corner office. Needless to say, that doesn't always happen. Regardless of why, if your birthday milestone is giving you the blues, here's what to do about it.
Keep it in perspective
A lot of people compare themselves with others in the same age group. That is a recipe for failure, especially if you don’t know theircircumstances intimately. They may be comparing themselves to you and believing you are having a better life. Comparison should be saved for choosing vegetables or buying a car. Here is another thing to consider. Your thirtieth birthday is just another birthday. It doesn’t change who you are, it just changes the number in the ten’s column. It would be better to set milestones that aren’t age related. You can choose any other aspect of your life to concentrate on and celebrate your achievements when they happen.
Not happy? It's not too late to start over
No one says you have to be in your 20s to have a great career, change your mind about what you want to be, write a book, or learn a new skill. There are a whole host of famous and inspiring authors, actors, and company founders who didn't start until they were already well into their 50s or 60s. If they can do it, so can you.The most important thing about your birthday is that it should be a celebration of life. Your life, your mother’s life and if you are married, celebrate the lives of your spouse or offspring. Keep this in mind when your big birthday comes around.
